The Reis Family appears here as part of the Man family web site as a result of the marriage between Sheila Allwynne Cran Reis and Frank Otto Stoe Man on 25 October 1946. Sheila was the daughter of Gordon Stanley Reis.

The Reis family begins with Generation One which consists of just one Reis namely Jonas (right) who married Marian Samuel the daughter of Harriet (Israel) and Moses Samuel (see Samuel Family).

So far, earlier generations of this Reis family have not been uncovered.  As far as is known there are descendants alive today from two of Jonas’s sons: Arthur Montagu and Alphonse Louis, and quite possibly his daughters. The eldest son Charles Lionel Reis may well having living descendants but so far no contact has been made. It has recently been found that Jonas had siblings including Simon who died young and Eva (1817 – 1890) who married Joseph Lebrecht.

A major source of genealogical information on the Reis family is ‘The Samuel Family of Liverpool and London‘, as well as ‘Records of the Franklin Family’.  The photograph below was taken in Paris and is, we believe, that of Jonas’s father Maurice Reis who married Emile / Emilie Picard.

Jonas Reis is the only Reis in Generation One (for now). Jonas is believed to have been born ca. 1820 in Alsace Lorraine, then Germany, the son of Maurice and Emilie (Picard) Reis of Paris. He married Marian Samuel the daughter of Harriet (Israel) and Moses Samuel, on 13 August 1848 at Pilgrim Street Synagogue, Liverpool. He died on 25 March 1877 in Liverpool, age 56 and was buried at Deane Road Cemetery, Liverpool, on 28 March. It is understood that he had sisters.

Marian was born on 20 July 1825 in Liverpool. After the death of Jonas, Marian married Philip Schoeppler (a wine merchant) on 3 April 1879 at Liverpool. Marian died, aged 72, on 16 June, 1900, at 18 Cavendish Road, London.

Philip died on 19 October 1915 at 4 Mazenad Avenue, Kilburn, and from his will, it states that he is ‘of the National Safe Deposit Company’ of 1 Queen Victoria Street, London EC.

2. Frank Swallow was born in 1890 and he died of pneumonia aged 9 months on 26 January 1891 at 6 Radnor Place, Birkenhead.

5. Elvira Muriel Breslauer was born in 1885 in Fulham, London. She married Clement William Sharp in 1906. Elvira died in 1923 in London. Clement was born in 1881.

2. Neville Alfred Gortmans was born in 1925 at 70 Sinclair Road, Kensington, London. He married Lillian Ada Crow (Joy) on 8 September 1945 at Ingatestone Chapel, Essex.  Joy was born on 12 May 1920 in Bromsgrove, Birmingham, the daughter of Violet (Rolf) and Edward Crow. She died on 25 February 2002 in Christchurch Hospital.
3. Dennis Gortmans was born in 1931 in Amsterdam, Holland. He married Aloisia Kerschagel on 1 June 1957 at the Hammersmith Registry Office.  Dennis died on 4 March 1991 at Luton, Bedfordshire. Aloisia was born on 17 April 1924 in Stiermark, Austria, and she died on 24 May 1991 in Luton.  Their children are still living.
4. Carole Marie (1946 –     ).

Audrey Phyllis Reis (1901 –  1954) and Barnet Libbish (    – 1969) had three children that belong to this generation.

1. Anne Reis, born on 24 September 1934 at Four Oaks, Warwickshire. She married Peter Dufour in 1958;
