The D’Oyley or Doyley or D’Oly family was a well-known Norman family and had extensive land holdings in both Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. This family connects with the Man family when Jane, the daughter of Robert (and unknown wife) Saunders marries George Man. Robert Saunders’ mother was Susannah D’Oyley and his father was John Saunders.
Unsubstantiated records have been found for this family starting with Generation One down to Generation Twelve, which is Susannah’s. Some of this family has been found in the Visitation of Buckinghamshire in 1634. Two generations of the family have been recorded in the parish of Hambleden, Buckinghamshire where Susanna D’Oyley marries John Saunders. It is their granddaughter, Jane Saunders, who married George Man. Those in bold are direct ancestors of Susanna D’Oyley. More details on the D’Oyley family in Hambleden can be found at the end of this page.

EARLIER DETAILS
Eweden / Yewden Manor was sold in 1354 to Thomas D’Oyley [Gen. 18]. (Nichols, Topog. and Gen. ii, 342. Cal. Close, 1354-60, p. 310.) A settlement was made in 1366 on Thomas D’Oyley, his wife Alice and their heirs. (Feet of F. Burks. Trin.40 Edw. III, no. 8.) Thomas died in 1384. (Chan. Inq. p.m. 8 Ric. II, no. 80.) Alice leased Yewden to their son and heir William [Gen. 17], who retired there. Chan. Inq., loc.cit. John, William’s elder son, became a monk, but Yewden remained in the hands of his younger son Richard. [Gen. 16] Richard’s grandson John [Gen. 14] changed the chief seat to Greenlands in Yewden on acquiring that estate about 1480. [Guessing at this point that Richard’s son was called William.]
Rec. of Bucks. viii, 363, which gives a D’Oyley pedigree corrected and amplified from Bayley’s Account of the House of D’Oyly, pp. 19-21. John was buried at Hurley, Berks, in 1492.
Thomas [Gen. 13], son and heir of John D’Oyley, was buried at Hambleden in 1545.
Rec. of Bucks. loc. cit. Bayley took extracts from the parish register in confirmation of the D’Oyley burials.
Thomas’s son John [Gen. 12] died in 1570 and was succeeded by his son Robert [Gen. 11], who was afterwards knighted. (Chan. Inq. p.m. (Se. 2), cliii, 6.b; Visit. Of Oxon, (Harl. Soc.), 226.)
Robert was Sheriff of Oxfordshire and died at the Black Assizes at Oxford in 1577. (Musgrave’s Obit. (Harl. Soc.), iv, 339. Chan, Inq. p.m. (Ser. 2), clxxx, 8.)
On the death of Robert’s widow, Elizabeth Bacon, in 1620 (see Turville), Yewden Manor reverted to Robert’s brother and heir John [Gen. 11], who died in 1622. Ibid. Loc. cit., cccc.
